Course work Description

This document describes the Project to be completed by the students who are taking the module CSCW in the academic year 2012/13. The course-work is designed around hard deadlines and accounts for 50% of the final mark.

Learning outcomes

The course-work is designed to give students first-hand experience of the design and evaluation of an online community. The project includes both individual and group activities. Students are exposed to typical group work dynamics, and will learn how to share information and co-ordinate activities. Furthermore, they will learn how to present their findings and co-ordinate a design team.

Time scale

The project will be conducted in semester 2 starting on March 13 2013. It includes 3 deliverables.

D1. Setting up an effective team. (10% of project mark)

Deadline: March 25, 17 PM.

The first task is aimed at setting up the socio-technical infrastructure for the project. It includes 4 activities.

Meet your groupmate face to face. Reflect on what type of group you are (based on the group formation space), think of strategies and actions that you will need to put in place in order to maximise your changes of success in group work (e.g., increase social identity). Go through the 4 steps of the creation phase of the team formation framework.
Fill in your digital portfolio (MyCv's app in Smart Campus) and share it with the members of your group. Set up a group with My People. To fill your CV you need to use the web-site https://ac.smartcampuslab.it/ac-service-provider-web/ac/getToken?code=&redirect=https://vas.smartcampuslab.it:/mycvs/

Decide what groupware tools, you will use during the course-work to support your group work. List the selected tools explaining the rationale for the selection. Make an analysis of the weaknesses and strengths of these tools based on the time-space matrix.
Use the smart campus apps and get familiar with them Critical analysis of smart campus app.

Report — Maximum two A4 pages reporting a critical reflection on the activities. Use the following questions as guide in the exercise:

What problems did you encounter in forming the team?
How did the framework and the theoretical knowledge introduced during week 1 helped you?
What information did your share in the “MyCv's” app and why?
How the information contained in the other people CV changed your perception of them, as compared to the face-to-face meeting?
What other information would you have liked to share in MyCV and why?
What other information would you have liked to know about other people and why?
