Video Presentation

Description
The objectives of this AI curriculum (lectures, labs, and internship@Hospitals) are specifically designed and developed for medicine students: 1) to provide a conceptual mapping of the fundamental principles that govern artificial intelligence systems, 2) to present their applications in medicine, and 3) to co-develop AI use cases in the hospitals' clinical units within interdisciplinary teams of doctors, students, and AI researchers.

Teaching
The lab activities will provide practical examples of the main applications of machine learning in medicine, with a particular focus on automated data analysis for diagnostic purposes (for example, through image classification). Last but not least, the internship will aim to apply what has been learned in lectures and laboratories to real case studies in clinical environments or research groups in the AI field. The clinical units are selected from the regional hospital network or in partnership with the University of Trento.

Contents
The course will present the fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and machine learning. The course will discuss case studies and applications of AI systems in the healthcare sector. In the central part of the course, laboratory sessions will provide practical examples of physiological signal analysis. The course will present and apply supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to these signals. Several examples of automatic diagnostic analysis of time series and images will be provided. The internship will be conducted in one of the operational units of clinics affiliated with the medical school. The course aims to apply the knowledge acquired in lectures and labs to the review of decision-making processes in the medical and clinical fields.

Final Assessment
Students will present and discuss the use case they co-developed with MDs from different hospital units and AI researchers from the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science.
