%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %%% %%% DATA STRUCTURES & ALGORITHMS (DSA): EXAM ORGANIZATION & RULES %%% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %%% SOME FACULTY REGULATIONS (FOR ALL EXAMS, NOT ONLY FOR DSA) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% [This is an informal extract from the faculty regulations, as they have been verbally exposed to the teacher. See the full text of the regulations for clarifications or a more precise description, or ask the secretary offices. ] * There will be three sessions of the exam, in accordance with the official calendar: - june/july, - september, - january/february. No extra exam session can be held outside the three officiall dates, neither in public nor in private form. * If a students fails the exam, he/she can repeat it next session. * If a student gets a sufficient vote on a script, it will be permanently registered after two weeks in his/her career. * If a student does not pass the exam within the three sessions, he/she will have to rely on next-year's course organization. * Only students who have regularly registered to the exam-session list will be admitted to te exam. * If a students registers for the exam session and he/she does not show up at the exam without un-registering, then he/she will not be admitted to the next session, he will be admitted to the next-next session (if any). * To be admitted at the exam, each student is mandatorily supposed to present a valid Identification Document (Passport, Carta d'Identita', student's card ...) with NAME, SURNAME and PHOTOGRAPH. No student is admitted to the exam without such an I.D. %%% DSA: EXAM ORGANIZATION %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% * The exam is script only. No oral part will be taken (even upon request). * The exam consists in a script session, divided into two parts: P1. a script test consisting in a list of multiple-answer questions. P2. a script test consisting in questions requiring some degree of verbosity (theoretical questions, exercises, pseudo-code, simple java programs,...). To this extent: - P1 performs a pre-selection. IF ONE STUDENT DOES NOT PASS THE P1 PART, HE/SHE FAILS THE EXAM, REGARDLESS HIS/HER P2 PART (his/her P2 manuscript will not be corrected and evaluated.) - The final vote is a weighted combination of the votes of P1 and P2. * If a students fails the exam, in next sessions(s) he/she must repeat *both* P1 and P2. %%% DSA: IMPORTANT REMARK %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% No external factor or circumstance will be considered to raise the vote of an evaluation, to make exceptions to the failure criteria above, or to provide extra exam sessions. E.g., this includes (but is not limited to) the following potential circumstances for the student: - high number of previous attempts, - advanced matriculation year, - sickness, - work constraints, - family difficulties, - economical difficulties, - possible loss of grants, - possible loss of "stay permit" ("permesso di soggiorno") - already-scheduled flights or traveling, - military status, - natural/political calamities in the student's country, - ... We understand that this may look insensitive wrt. possible problems of the student. Nevertheless, we enforce the principle that the exam is an evaluation of the status of the student's knowledge, and no other factor or circumstance can influence its outcome. %%% DSA: EXAM RULES %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% * During the script exam, no student is allowed to leave the room unless he/she returns permanently his/her manuscript. * The student can bring to the exam only pens, pencils and handwriting/erasing devices (plus something to drink). No paper. (Plain white paper is provided by the examiners.) * During the script exam, it is not possible to consult or look at any source of information, including (but not limited to): - books/photocopies/printouts/handwritten texts etc. - PCs/phones/electronic devices in general - the manuscript test of other students - other students Any unauthorized attempt, by the examiners' indisputable interpretation, will cause the end and failure of the exam. * During the script exam it is allowed to ask questions to the examiners only, and only if they refer to the interpretation of the questions. * The text of the answers returned by the student must be clear, understandable and unambiguous.
