Fabrizio Granelli was born in Genoa in 1972. He received the "Laurea" (M.Sc.) degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 1997, with a thesis on video coding, awarded with the TELECOM Italy prize, and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the same university in 2001.

He is Associate Professor in Networking at Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Scienza dell'Informazione (DISI) of the University of Trento (Italy). In August 2004 and 2010, he was visiting professor at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil).

He is currently IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer for the period 2012-2013.

He was General Chair of the 11th and 15th International Workshop on Computer Aided Design and Analysis of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD'06 | CAMAD'10), co-sponsored by IEEE Communication Society (and currently ComSoc portofolio flagship event). He is TPC Co-Chair of Globecom 2007 Symposium on "Performance Modeling, QoS and Reliability", Globecom 2008 Symposium on "Communications QoS, Reliability, and Performance Modeling", Globecom 2009 Symposium on "Communications QoS, Reliability, and Performance Modeling" and Globecom 2012 Symposium on "Communications QoS, Reliability, and Modeling".
He is guest editor of MONET Special Issue on "Recent Advances in IEEE 802.11 WLANs: Protocols, Solutions and Future Directions" and of ACM TOMACS Special Issue on "Modeling and Simulation of Cross-Layer Interactions in Communication Networks".

Teaching Activities

Dr. Granelli is currently Deputy Head of the ICT Council of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Trento.
He is in charge of the following courses: "Telecommunication Networks", "Network Modeling and Design", "Design of Networks and Communications Systems" within the Laurea (B.Sc.) and the Master (M.Sc.) Degrees in Telecommunications Engineering and Information and Organization Engineering. In such framework, Dr. Granelli coordinates the study plan on Telecommunication Networks.

Research

F. Granelli was coordinator of the Networking Research Lab at DISI - University of Trento in 2006-2010 (click here for a brief presentation of the lab, focused on wireless networking). The research interests of Dr. Granelli are mainly focused on networking, with particular attention to network modeling and performance evaluation, access control, and next-generation telecommunication networks (cognitive networks, wireless mesh networks). Recently, he started to work in new areas such as smart grid communications and green networking. He is author of more than 120 papers published in several international journals and conferences.

Dr. Granelli is former Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Communication Systems Integration and Modeling (CSIM) (2009-2010, vice-chair in 2007-08, secretary in 2005-06) and guest editor of the special issues of the Journal on Special Topics in Mobile Networking and Applications (MONET) on "WLAN Optimization at the MAC and Network Levels", "Ultra Wide Band for Sensor Networks" and "Recent Advances in IEEE 802.11 WLANs: Protocols, Solutions and Future Directions". Fabrizio Granelli is Guest Editor of the Hindawi Journal of Computer Systems, Networks and Communications Special Issue on "Lightweight Mobile and Wireless Systems: Technologies, Architectures, and Services" (submission deadline: Feb. 1st, 2010).

Dr. Granelli is Senior member of IEEE and Associate Editor of IEEE ComSoc Surveys and Tutorials, and International Journal on Communications Systems.
