SUPREME - Self-powered Smart Energy Systems
SUPREME
Duration:12 months
Role: Scientific Investigator
Funding: Industrial Fundings
Energy saving in residential and commercial buildings is one of the key themes in sustainability strategies for the near future. The building sector is responsible for the 40% of the overall energy consumptions and it is divided in conditioning (heating, cooling and ventilation) and electrical (appliances) consumptions. Despite numerous energy efficiency policies, the electrical consumption continues to grow. The aim of the project is SUPREME, a novel Self-Powered Wireless Sensor Metering Network (WSMN) system for monitoring energy usage and controlling AC appliances in different kind of buildings, so that end-user can understand their power consumption and reduce them.

3ENCULT - Efficient ENergy for EU Cultural Heritage
3ENCult
Start Date: 2010-10-01
Project Reference: 260162
Duration:42 months
Role: Scientific Investigator
End date: 2014-03-31
Funding: FP7-ENVIRONMENT
Project cost: 6.6 M€
Link to the Project
The project 3ENCULT bridges the gap between conservation of historic buildings and climate protection, which is not an antagonism at all: historic buildings will only survive if maintained as living space. Energy efficient retrofit is useful for structural protection as well as for comfort reasons - comfort for users and 'comfort' for heritage collections. The joint task of conservation and energy efficient retrofit is highly interdisciplinary. The 3ENCULT consortium will demonstrate the feasibility of 'Factor 4' to 'Factor 10' reduction in energy demand, depending on the case and the heritage value, with the help of ICT technology.

REALITY - Reliable and variability tolerant system-on-a-chip design in more-moore technologies
CONET
Start Date: 2008-01-01
Project Reference: 216537
Duration:32 months
Role: Scientific Investigator
End date: 2010-08-31
Funding: FP7-ICT-2007.3.1
Project cost: 4.4 M€
Link to the Project
As miniaturization of the CMOS technology advances designers will have to deal with increased variability and changing performance of devices. Intrinsic variability of devices which begins to be visible in 65nm devices already will become much more significant in smaller technologies. Soon it will not be possible to design systems using current methods and techniques. Dealing with these new challenges will require an adaptation of the current design process: a combination of design time and runtime techniques and methods will be needed to guarantee the correct functioning of Systems on Chip (SoC) over the product's lifetime, despite the fabrication in unreliable nano-scale technologies. The objective of this project is to develop design techniques and methods for real-time guaranteed, energy-efficient, robust and self-adaptive SoCs.

Fuel Cell Power Supply
Thesis The thesis will be devoted to the design, implementation and test of electronic circuits for power conversion and control of micro size fuel cells used for low power small factor devices. This circuit will have the unregulated voltage of the fuel cells as input and will provide a regulated voltage output making them compatible with the powered device.

Multi-source Energy Harvester
Thesis The thesis aims at performing architectural exploration and will develop high efficient circuits for power conversion from environmental sources. uW applications will be powered by energy scavenged from the environment exploring several sources (photovoltaic, thermal, kinetic, vibrational). The thesis will deal also with modularity for energy harvesters and with the management of the energy storage units.

Design of a circuit for Energy Harvesting and Wake-On using PLM (Power Line Modulation).
Thesis Thesis in collaboration with ST Microelectronics.
Power line communication is a technology which carries data on a conductor that is also used simultaneously for AC electric power transmission or electric power distribution. It is a Hot technology which is promising a wide diffusion in the next years both for residential communication and wide area communication (e.g. Smart cities and energy efficient lighting).
The thesis proposal aims at designing a circuit which activates a Power Line Modem on-demand and without need of extra-energy. Indeed the energy will be directly extract from the signal modulation, with Zero-Impact on the AC electric power. STM has already covered similar approaches with other communication technologies (e.g. wireless, IR, … ), and the designed circuits have been patented. It is expected that the outcome of the thesis will be also the object of a patent, where the student included among the inventors.
The work will be done both in the STM premises (Agrate, Milano) and in University of Trento (Povo, Trento).
Expected effort: 5-6 months.
