TECHNOLOGY AND SPORT

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice there is.

My interests and background education on formal methods (mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, game theory) have led me to research into forms of inductive reasoning, learning, coordination, cooperation, teamwork and the like, all issues of primary practical importance in team sports!

Video-based analysis of sport events is an important tool in analysis of individual players' performance and sport teams, e.g. match analysis; but usually it requires many hours of manual work. Multimedia (video-based) Information Retrieval methods can provide help in automating many of those tasks.

In the research group on Adaptive Information Retrieval I run, our interests in Sport & Technology are:

  • tracking of athletes/players
  • ball tracking
  • motion data processing and analysis
  • individual activity detection, recognition and analysis
  • team (multi-agent) activity detection, recognition and analysis
If you'd like to know more about us, send me mail at dit.unitn.it, the userid is agostini.

M.Sc. thesis proposals in a spectrum of applications of IR technology to sport are available. [Closing date: 31 June 2008]

If some of our activities is of interest, I would be delighted to hear from you.
