Project details
Project astract The project aims to analyze knowledge management issues in a Trenitalia's department, called UTMR (Unita'Ã?Â? Tecnologie Materiale Rotabile) and to design and implement a system able to support the organization with respect to such theme.
The project is in collaboration with TSF (Tele Sistemi Ferroviari), the Company of the Telecom Italia and Finsiel Group dedicated to the Information & Communication Technology market for the Transport sector. Its core competence grounds on a deep knowledge of problems relating to the world of transport.
The KM problems pointed out by our analysis in UTMR department are strongly related to semantic heterogeneity, since the department is made up of several groups, each with its own point of view, its own language, its own way of doing things. This heterogeneity plays often as a barrier in performing those organizational tasks where collaboration and communication are required. For this reason we followed the Distributed Knowledge Management approach which suggests first to point out the organization's communities and to support their autonomous way of managing knowledge; second the DKM paradigm suggests to understand which are the relationships among communities so that collaboration dynamics could be supported.
The system we proposed is in fact based on these two aspects: autonomy and coordination. From a technological point of view this leaded us to design an integrated system which includes three products:
1. a more traditional document management system which provide each community with a repository where to store the official community's documents; moreover this product provides communities' members with document workflow management functionalities which support people in the document structuring and writing processes;
2. a tool based on P2P technology, able to support people in knowledge sharing by providing a information retrieval algorithm able to match different categorization logics. This allows people to share documents and information (stored in their own pc) among the communities, while they autonomously organize these docments according to their own aims and points of view (represented for example by their file system structures). Such tool is intended as supporting people in their collaborative relationships, thanks to which new knowledge is created
3. an information retrieval technology which allows UTMR people to retrieve documents stored in the document management system and in all the other company's repositories
