Project details
Project astract ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The ATLAS detector is searching for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. ATLAS will learn about the basic forces that have shaped our Universe since the beginning of time and that will determine its fate. Among the possible unknowns are the origin of mass, extra dimensions of space, unification of fundamental forces, and evidence for dark matter candidates in the Universe.

DISI Sub-project details
Project astract The Insertable B-Layer (IBL) is a fourth layer added to the present Pixel detector between a
new beam pipe and the current inner Pixel layer (B-layer). The principal motivations of the project
are improved tracking robustness and precision, and capability to cope with larger luminosity and radiation doses, as well as beam pipe replacement.
The activity in Trento deals with the characterization, in laboratory and beam tests, of 3D detectors coupled to the FEI4 read-out chip. During 2011 the final decision on the detector technology for IBL will be taken. If 3D detectors will be the technology of choice, it is planned to design the final prototypes.
