Project details

Project astract This experimental activity is aimed at the characterization of the gamma ray response of FBK CMOS SPAD detectors coupled to LYSO scintillator as planned within the activities due in the EU-FP7 SPADnet project.
The planned experimental activity will include:
1) Assembly of gamma ray detectors based on LYSO crystals coupled to CMOS SPAD devices provided by FBK using a proper optical medium (optical grease with high index of refraction).
2) Functional characterization (energy spectrum) of these assemblies at different gamma ray energies in the range of interest for application in Positron Emission Tomography (PET). It is planned to use different radioactive sources among those available, with energies in the range between 50keV and 2.5MeV.
3) Comparison of the spectroscopic response of these assemblies with those of other assemblies built using Silicon Photomultipliers.
4) Evaluation of timing properties of the detectors in relation to the specifications of PET application. In particular, in a preliminary setup, it is planned to explore the possibility of using the output signal from a SiPM as a trigger for the timing circuits included in the CMOS SPAD devices provided by FBK.
