Project details
Project astract The recent developments in the remote sensing technology resulted in the possibility to acquire with high temporal frequency very detailed images of the Earth surface from satellites. These images have metric (or also sub-metric) resolution and can be acquired both by passive mutispectral sensors and active synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. This results in the availability of data that can be used in the framework of many application related to environmental monitoring, analysis of antrophic structures and infrastructures, land-cover mapping and climate change. However, the huge amount of data currently acquired by satellite sensors can be properly exploited in the applications only with the use of automatic data analysis techniques implemented on high performance computing architectures.
In the aforementioned framework, this project has two main goals: i) the development of a laboratory with high computing performances facilities suitable to the development of research and application projects based on the data provided by the last generation of remote sensing satellites; ii) the development of advanced methodologies and techniques for the analysis of remote sensing data and their implementation on HPC architectures.
The project will results in the availability of both an infrastructure and a set of data analysis techniques that will be suitable for facing the most important challenging research problems and applications based on the currently available remote sensing technology. This will make it possible to address a high number of strategic applications of high interest at local, regional and global geographical scales.
