Project details

Project astract The Internet has been, up to now, mainly transporting elastic traffic, i.e., data carried over TCP,
whose congestion control mechanisms adapt the sender rate to the actual network congestion.
The explosion of large scale P2P streaming applications for the distribution of high-definition
or high quality video will require the transportation of very large volumes of traffic with realtime
(or soft real-time) constraints. This has a potentially disruptive impact on the transport
infrastructure. The NAPA-WINE project starts from the consideration that a deep
understanding of the impact on the transport network of a massive deployment of these
applications is pretty urgent, in light of the tremendous effect that these new systems could
have.
In what follows, we refer to systems for the distribution of video corresponding to high
volume of traffic with the term P2P-high-quality TV (P2P-HQTV), regardless of the video
being real high-definition TV or simply high-quality video (in both cases generating high
volumes of traffic), and we use the term P2P-TV whenever we do not restrict our attention to
applications generating high volumes of traffic.
