Introduction
Nomadic communications are the emerging mobility services: not cellular,
yet enabling movement and ubiquitous access to resources.
Sometimes people refer to these services as nomadic computing, yet the
enabling feature is the possibility of communicating, not the possibility
of computing! Mobile computers are available since many years in the
form of laptops, and many more in more subtle and simple forms,
(but who would call his pocket calculator "nomadic computer"),
yet nobody started even thinking of "mobile" or "nomadic" before
devices were able to be connected to a global network, or, if you prefer,
to the Internet
The enabling technologies for nomadic communications are broadband,
short range, cheap wireless connections. This course will address
these wireless communicatiosn (802.11, 802.16, ZigBee, Buetoooth, ...) plus
the need for network level mobility and roaming, such as provided by Mobile
IP ... or substitutes of it.
