European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA announced officially the final selection of the instruments to be onboard of the European Mission to Jupiter: the "JUpiter ICy moon Explorer (JUICE)". JUICE is the largest mission planned for the exploration of the Solar system in the next 20 years. The Principal Investigator and responsible for the "Radar for Icy Moon Exploration" (RIME) instrument is Lorenzo Bruzzone of DISI. Under the leadership of Prof. Bruzzone, RIME will be developed as a cooperation between Italian Space Agency and NASA.
RIME is a radar sounder designed to penetrate the icy crust of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto (Jupiter icy moons) to a depth of about 9 kilometers. RIME will allow scientists to see for the first time the underground structure of these tectonically complex and unique icy worlds and could lead to the direct detection of subsurface water, which is one of the basic ingredients for the identification of life on the Jupiter moons.

Prof. Themis Palpanas has won the IBM Shared University Research (SUR) Award for the work that the dbTrento group is doing on streaming data analytics. The IBM SUR Award is a prestigious award given by IBM Research to a few selected researchers worldwide.
This award will fund the research work of dbTrento on Large Scale City-Patterns Recognition. This project involves the development of a real-time pattern recognition algorithm for Smarter Cities. Cities are nowadays fitted with a large variety of sensing devices (i.e., interconnected sensors, or computing nodes of various capabilities) that continuously receive and send large amounts of heterogeneous information at high rates. Current mining techniques are not adapted for processing this kind of data in an efficient way. Important patterns are contained in these data (we call these patterns city-patterns), whose identification is a complex process due to the very large, heterogeneous and highly variable data context. This project will focus on real-time city-pattern recognition, and develop novel techniques specific to this context.

Cutting the Costs of Secure, Evolving Software
Europe's Newsroom (08/15/12)
The European Union-funded SecureChange project found that only about one-third of a program's code changed from one version to the next. However, a substantial number of vulnerabilities were inherited by each new version from its predecessor. The SecureChange researchers developed a methodology, techniques, and tools to make the software lifecycle more efficient, flexible, secure, and less costly. "Our main idea was to consider change itself as a first-class citizen, using evolution rules for the software to make sure that each change respects the desired security properties," says University of Trento professor Fabio Massacci. "In this way, you automatically know that any modification satisfies your desired properties." The approach focuses on the difference between the old and new release of the software. "Test engineers can quickly and easily identify which tests are needed, what is new and what is obsolete, thereby avoiding the need to re-test millions of lines of code that have not changed and enabling them to focus their efforts on what is really new and hence potentially more risky," Massacci says. The approach also focuses on designing changes to the software in a granular fashion, so modifications to one element of the software do not impact other elements.

Remote Entrusting is a novel paradigm with the specific objective of ensuring that code running on an untrusted machine, is being executed in a trustworthy manner. In other words, the original code functionality (as originally specified and implemented) has not been modified prior to or during run-time. The assumption is the availability of a connection to trusted entities.
The workshop is organized by the RE-TRUST project (Remote EnTrusting by RUn-time Software au-Thentication), funded by the European Commission, under the Future Emerging Technology (FET) program. See http://www.re-trust.org for more details on previous workshops. We intend to bring researchers together that are interested in the various topics that are related to the remote entrusting paradigm, for open discussions.
