The paper "Is There Light at the Ends of the Tunnel? Wireless Sensor Networks for Adaptive Lighting in Road Tunnels" whose authors include DISI faculty members Prof. Renato Lo Cigno and Prof. Gian Pietro Picco along with researchers at FBK-IRST, Create-Net, and Siemens, received the Best Paper Award at the 10th ACM/IEEE Internatinal Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN 2011), a flagship conference in the field of wireless sensor networks.
The paper illustrates an innovative system for adaptive lighting in road tunnels that relies on a wireless sensor network deployed inside the tunnel. This sensor network acquires light samples and sends them to a controller, which closes the loop by setting the appropriate light intensity of the lamps to maximize safety and minimize energy consumption, while meeting the regulations. This work is one of the major outcomes of the TRITon research and innovation project, and is currently operational in the Cadine tunnel.

Public administrations, enterprises and citizens are increasingly going green and are looking to the information technology as the way to reduce energy consumption and to become more environmentally responsible in all human activities. In particular reducing buildings overall energy consumption, providing smarter power grids and optimizing industrial processes are certainly some of the major efforts. Distributed and pervasive sensing, monitoring and control will play a key role in achieving this goal and will pose novel research challenges in the development of distributed applications that must integrate aspects related to generation, storage, distribution and efficient use of energy sources.
The goal of this summer school is to: i) survey the most relevant research domains; ii) present various perspectives and underlying technologies; iii) identify the most important challenges and research themes; iv) interact with distinguished scholars and establish contacts that may lead to research collaborations in the future.

We are happy to announce that the paper "Applying SMT in Symbolic Execution of Microcode" by A. Franzen, A. Cimatti, A. Nadel, R. Sebastiani, and J. Shalev won the "Best paper Award" at Formal Methods in Computer Aided Design International Conference - FMCAD'10.
The paper describes the work on formal verification techniques for microcode by the PhD student Anders Franzen, under the direction of Dr. Alessandro Cimatti (FBK) and Prof. Roberto Sebastiani (DISI), in collaboration with scientists from Intel.
Quoting the motivations of the award:
The paper is a pleasure to read, and provides impressive results. The paper shows that SMT-based techniques can beat SAT-techniques in an industrial setting, even for problems where SAT has previously been the dominating technique. These results, although anticipated by the SMT community for a long time, had not been established this conclusively so far. Bravo and congratulations!

We are glad to announce that Viviana Toss will be awarded as best student of 2007-08 A.Y. during the "Inauguration of Academic Year 2009/2010", 1st December 2010. Viviana Toss discussed her thesis "On-line test techniques for safety critical microcontrollers" in July 2008, at the end of her fifth academic year course, obtaining the maximum grade "110 e lode".
The thesis' advisor are Roberto Passerone (UniTN) and Dr. Alberto Ferrari (Parades Scarl, Roma).
Here a comment by prof. Roberto Passerone:
In her thesis work, Viviana addressed important issues related to the study of reliability of electronic components used in the realization of safety critical systems. Viviana has developed methods for the online self test of microcontrollers, demonstrating maturity in applying her multidisciplinary knowledge to real case studies. Focusing her attention on the quality of the work, Viviana was able to weave technical and organizational aspects with the regulatory issues which characterize this kind of systems.

Last Sunday, 5th of July, DISI took part in Maratona dles Dolomites with Pinkr project, an initiative born in April 2009, from the effort and collaboration of three different partners: University of Trento (DISI), San Raffaele Foundation and SAP company.
The idea who led these three partners to start the challenging project was to build a simple yet comprehensive platform to monitor health conditions of patients. The Pinkr platform is a first attempt in this direction and aims at monitoring sportsmen during their training sessions.
Pinkr offers different useful features to its users: keep track of personal races, training plans, runs comparison. Differently from other platforms, Pinkr also enables social features to connect people who loves different kinds of sports.
During the marathon, three cyclists were monitored real-time. Their course and the project itself aired live on RAI 3 channel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzL_gcydjMc).

Remote Entrusting is a novel paradigm with the specific objective of ensuring that code running on an untrusted machine, is being executed in a trustworthy manner. In other words, the original code functionality (as originally specified and implemented) has not been modified prior to or during run-time. The assumption is the availability of a connection to trusted entities.
The workshop is organized by the RE-TRUST project (Remote EnTrusting by RUn-time Software au-Thentication), funded by the European Commission, under the Future Emerging Technology (FET) program. See http://www.re-trust.org for more details on previous workshops. We intend to bring researchers together that are interested in the various topics that are related to the remote entrusting paradigm, for open discussions.
